‘It was weird opening this letter because apart from never having seen my natural mum’s handwriting before, a photograph of her slipped out – the first time I clapped eyes on her.  She posted it in the night I had first talked to her, on the phone.  She wrote: ‘’Hope you slept well last night and aren’t too hyped up.  I am still trying to believe that I have spoken to you.  It just seems so much like all my dreams.  No words can describe how I felt or feel.”

[Sarah Watts (almost certainly a pseudonym) recounts receiving a letter from her biological mother.  By the time Sarah was 38 years old and had children of her own, her desire to discover the identity of her birth mother had become overwhelming.  She wanted to know why she had been given up for adoption at birth and, ultimately, to fill in the missing piece of her identity.  To her surprise, after just a few months, she managed to get her biological mother on the phone.  ‘’Next day, I got the letter and a photograph of her.  I was so surprised that although she wore glasses and dressed differently to me, she looked just like me.’’]
