Mansfield, who was born in New Zealand, was an influential modernist writer of short stories in the early twentieth century. She had a very strong emotional and symbolic relationship with the sea, not only in the sense of love for nature. For her, the sea functioned also like a mirror of inner life. In her letters and writings, the sea often changes meaning, depending on her state of mind. She died of tuberculosis in 1923 at the age of 34.]
