Kaori Tamura
Kaori Tamura (b.1987) is a contemporary artist born in Yokohama, Japan.
She grew up in a port town, where her imagination was nurtured by taking walks on
the sea and mountain paths, and by loving animals, fishes and plants.
She majored in oil painting at Tama Art University, where she received excellent
grades, and in graduate Tokyo University of the Arts, where she majored in copperplate
engraving, giving her works depth beyond her field. During her college years, she used
the tempera technique to pursue the quality of her works. This enabled her to express
delicate lines in terms of technique. Starting with a solo exhibition in Tokyo around the
same time, she has continued to exhibit her works, mainly in Asia.
Her technique involves engraving lines with a needle over layers of paint to express an
inner world. The process of engraving at artworks she said, is akin to exploring the
inner world. The works evokes some anonymous deep sea or the edge of the universe.
The religious culture and animism of the Japanese Yaoyorozu are at the root of her
work, merged with her accumulated memories and expressed in her works. For this
reason, various creatures are depicted in these. She believes that respect for what can be
seen and imagination for what cannot be seen enrich the world.
About Green color: Peridotite has been studied as a major component of the mantle
that covers the Earth’s core. The excavated peridotite is green in color. So there may be
a green world beneath the soil.
